Chiavari, Italy

Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, a craftsman from the coastal town of Chiavari, Italy first designed chiavari chairs in 1807. Descalzi modeled his design after several Parisian chairs, brought back to him by Marquis Stefano Rivarola, founder of the Economic Society of Chiavari.

Descalzi set out to create a lightweight, functional, yet elegant chair, he truly succeeded. His creation, an armless chair with simple lines, and sturdy construction has changed very little over the years. Over 200 years later chiavari chairs have become one of the world’s most popular choices in seating for special events replacing the more traditional chair cover. Chiavari chairs have been used in many events ranging from weddings, to high profile events such as the Grammy’s, as well as on television shows.
